Formative Bargaining: Sensing and Shaping the Negotiating Field

Every major negotiation framework asks: how do you find the best agreement within the available space? Formative bargaining asks a prior question: how is that space created in the first place? This block introduces a conceptually distinctive approach to negotiation — one that draws on field theory, Taoist philosophy, and the somatic intelligence of Tai Chi push-hands practice to develop the capacity not merely to operate within the negotiating field, but to sense and shape it.

The four operational pillars — Be Still, Be Rooted, Be Attuned, Be Flowing — are not a sequence but a repertoire: regulatory states from which appropriate action arises. Participants develop the practical disciplines of tempo regulation, structural grounding, full-field listening, and adaptive redirection of force.

The workshop also addresses negotiating under pressure, with difficult people and in challenging situations, and is particularly suited to those operating in high-stakes, complex, or asymmetric environments.

This block works as a standalone session and pairs naturally with Bargaining Strategy and Tactics for participants who want both the tactical and the formative dimensions of the negotiating process.

Learning environment: The session takes place in a sufficiently large room with chairs arranged in a circle. Tables are not used: they create distance and inhibit the quality of interaction that makes the learning real. Video recording is not permitted, as it affects both confidentiality and the natural dynamics of group interaction. Photography is welcome before or after the workshop.

Timeframe: 4 hours with a 15-minute break.

Optimal group size: from 12 to 30 participants.
